MUHARRAQ booked their ticket to the quarter-finals last night despite a 59-76 loss to El Gezira of Egypt in the 30th Arab Clubs Basketball Championship, being played in Morocco. Muharraq qualified as one of two best third-placed teams from the main round. Playing in Group 'A', they suffered their second loss in three games. Gezira finished in first place with an unbeaten record in three contests, while Chabibat El Manzeh of Tunisia finished in second place with two wins and one loss. Muharraq have one victory, which came against FUS of Morocco last Thursday. The Bahrainis have been relying heavily on their backcourt tandem of Ahmed Hassan (203-F-91, college: MiraCosta JC) and Bader Abdulla in the tournament. Also playing well have been wings Sayed Kadhem and Ali Abbas, as well as big Ahmed Mutawa, Mohammed Juma'a, Ali Shukrallah and American professional Jordan Richard. Also advancing to the quarter-finals from Group 'B' were Homenetmen of Lebanon and Al Garafa of Qatar; and from Group 'C' AS Sale of Morocco, GS Petroliers of Algeria and AS Far of Morocco.
